About Dholavira Rock-Cut Reservoirs – Rann of Kutch
The Harappan world's most elaborate water engineering: 16 rock-cut and walled reservoirs inside and outside the walled town of Dholavira (2600–1900 BCE), excavated by R. S. Bisht 1990–2005. The system harvests monsoon sheet flow via two seasonal streams (Manhar and Mansar) diverted through check dams into an 80-ha catchment; the largest reservoir (Eastern Reservoir) is 33 m long, 9 m deep, cut 4 m into sandstone and walled 5 m, with staircases and 30 rock-cut wells.
Together the reservoirs store 250,000 m³ — a year-round supply for a city of 2,000 in the Rann desert. The system is older than Mesopotamian qanat and predates Dholavira's citadel, proving hydraulic primacy in Harappan urbanism. UNESCO inscribed Dholavira (1528, 2021) for this system.
