About
About Falaj al-Khatmeen (Birkat al-Mouz — UNESCO aflaj flagship)
5-km daudi (qanat) gallery tapping the Jebel Akhdar aquifer (Hajar carbonates) at 8 vertical shafts 12 m deep, delivering 70 l/s to the village date-garden and ruined mud-brick harat. Classical description in UNESCO's aflaj typology: daudi groundwater tunnel + sharia open channel with bifurcating sharī‘ distribution and falaj administration house (bayt al-falaj). Dated archaeologically to Iron Age II (1000–600 BCE) but Al Khatmeen's stone-capped shafts and Sasanian–Ya'aribah rebuild epigraphy show 2,000-year continuous maintenance.
Still active for 120 farmers' shares (athar timing system). Threatened by pumping and date beetle.
Why it mattersExemplar of 3,000-year aflaj institution — sustainability masterpiece and Oman identity.
