About Nymphaion — Northern Vineyard Terrace Submerged Harbour
Northern harbour-vineyard terrace of Nymphaion, the Bosporan 'vine city' famed for its celebrated wine (Athenaios) and painted tombs. 2 m of Geroevka Bay, a rock-cut quay 38 m long and three vine trenches (alveii) cut into limestone bedrock are preserved, their post-holes and press beds still visible beneath Zostera. The terrace connects to the acropolis necropolis above via a rock-cut stair. Submergence c. 5 m since Late Antiquity drowned the quay while the vineyard above was abandoned after Hun raids (370s CE).
Excavations (State Hermitage, 2013–) retrieved stamped amphorae (Chian, Heraklean) and a lead anchor stock inscribed 'Nymph'. The complex documents Bosporan viticulture integrated with harbour logistics.
Why it mattersOnly Bosporan vineyard-harbour integration preserved underwater; amphora stamps link Nymphaian wine to Athens market.
