About Nymphaion — Submerged Lower Terrace and Harbour (Eltegen, Crimea)

Major Bosporan commercial polis 17 km south of Kerch at rocky Eltegen cape, founded c.580 BCE, famed for grain export and temple of the Nymphs. Occupied 100 ha terrace; lower harbour terrace and mole now 1–4 m submerged 200 m offshore after Holocene subsidence and slope-wash. Excavated 1866–1990s by Imperial Commission and Hermitage: ashlar houses, wine presses, sanctuaries. Underwater survey 1970s Soviet archaeologists mapped ashlar header mole and submerged wall line now silted.

Why it mattersPrice-controlled grain fund tests show Bosporan grain export organization; harbour terrace anchors Kerch Strait relative sea-level; temple epigraphy clarifies Nymph cult.
