Major Bosporan commercial polis 17 km south of Kerch at rocky Eltegen cape, founded c.580 BCE, famed for grain export and temple of the Nymphs. Occupied 100 ha terrace; lower harbour terrace and mole now 1–4 m submerged 200 m offshore after Holocene subsidence and slope-wash. Underwater survey 1970s Soviet archaeologists mapped ashlar header mole and submerged wall line now silted.
